Anabolic steroids are an artificial substances that are closely related chemically to the male sex hormone, "testosterone". "Steroids" are classed as a drug and it is only legally available by prescription. Normally it is to treat conditions when the body produces abnormal low amounts of testosterone, such as delayed in puberty and other types of impotence. Steroids are also prescribed to treat AIDS patients and other diseases that result in loss of lean muscle mass. The abuse and wrongly used steroids can lead to serious heath problems and some are irreversible.
These days, you may hear people called steroids "roids", "juice", "hype" or pump". They are mainly your normal athletes such as swimmers, sprinter, body builders and etc who abuse steroids to enhance their performance and physical appearances. Steroids can be taken orally or by an injection, usually in a cycles of weeks or months (refer as "Steroid Cycle"), rather then continuously.
